Nuevo Nayarit Trivia

If you are looking for the perfect place to break out of your everyday routine, bask in the sun, and create incredible memories to fill up your picture album (and heart), let us tell you about Nuevo Nayarit.

This enchanting corner was previously known as Nuevo Vallarta, but it has always been a paradise that has it ALL, from dreamy beaches, sigh-inducing food, thrilling adventures, and of course, those one-of-a-kind touches that make it such a special place.

In this article, we will spill some fun facts about Nayarit and take you on a tour of everything that makes this spot so unforgettable. We’ll tell you how to get there, what to do, and even where to surf like a pro (or at least try to).

Let’s go!

How do I get to Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico?

Getting to Nuevo Nayarit is easier than you think, and even better, the trip is all part of the adventure! If you are coming from far away, your best option is flying into Aeropuerto Internacional Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz. This international airport is in Puerto Vallarta, in Jalisco state.

Truly, you are only 6.2 miles from this wonderland, so it is no problem to hail a taxi, book a private form of transportation, or rent a car. The best part is that in just 20 minutes you will feel the sea breeze caressing your face, and your nose will start picking up that distinctly salty smell that tells you that you are reaching the shore.

But, if you are a road trip lover, no problem, federal road 200 links the Ciudad de Tepic with Puerto Vallarta, making getting there child’s play
Plus, there are many bus lines that offer direct routes here, so this is your best option if you want to travel worry free and enjoy the scenery. So, just throw your swimsuit in your bag and head to the beach!

Whale Watching

If there is something that you can’t miss in Nuevo Nayarit, it is the magical performance put on by humpback whales and other marine species such as dolphins, orcas, and manta rays.

From December to March, these ocean giants set off on an epic journey from the icy waters of the North to the tropical shores of Nayarit. Why? Nayarit offers the perfect atmosphere for mating, giving birth, and caring for their newborn calves. You can see the show firsthand.

Just imagine… you’re in a boat, with the sun warming your skin and ocean sounds creating the soundtrack, when suddenly, a whale erupts from the water with a jaw-dropping jump. Its massive body elegantly breaks the surface, splashing water just as if it were a private show.

Meanwhile, the creatures fill the air with their songs, deep tones and melodies harmonizing to make this moment one which is impossible to capture in these lines.

Where and how to enjoy the show?

If you are wondering how to get to Nuevo Vallarta for this experience, there are several local businesses that organize boat tours lasting around 4 hours. Expert guides lead most of these excursions. They not only take responsibility for your safety but also entertain you with fascinating tidbits about whales and their behavior.

Some tours include underwater microphones (hydrophones) to listen to the whales singing in real time. Really! You could enjoy one of nature’s concerts in the middle of the ocean.

If you are lucky, you will also be able to see calves practicing their swimming, trying out little jumps, flicking their tails, and cavorting all under the watchful eyes of their mothers.

One last tip? Don’t forget your camera or smartphone (make sure your battery is charged) because these are experiences you will surely want to record for a lifetime. And if you have binoculars, even better, as they will let you catch every last movement of these marine mammoths.

Festival Amado Nervo

If you are into art and culture, or if you are simply curious and want a one-of-a-kind experience, another event in Nuevo Nayarit is the Festival Amado Nervo.

This festival honors the great poet and writer Amado Nervo. He is the pride of Tepic and all Nayarit state. More than just literary homage, this is an explosion of creativity, music, and tradition that transforms the region into an authentically artistic scene.

Every November, Tepic’s streets and its surroundings overflow with life thanks to local, national, and international artists who come to share their talents. It may be with thrilling concerts or even plays, or perhaps exhibitions, conferences, or workshops.

But the best part of this festival is the way it blends modernity and traditions. On one hand, you can hear classical poetry that will transport you through time, and on the other, you can be delighted by contemporary shows brimming with creativity and deeply rooted national identity.

Moreover, Festival Amado Nervo doesn’t just commemorate its namesake but also celebrates Nayarit’s rich culture. It is an atmosphere buzzing with energy, smiling people, good food, and that je ne sais quoi that only this place knows how to provide.

More than 180 Miles of Beaches

Can you imagine miles and miles of beaches just like on a postcard? Well, Nayarit offers this and more for an unforgettable vacation. From bays filled with rippling water just right for relaxing, to powerful breakers that attract surfers, there are endless things to do in Nuevo Vallarta for free. Just check them out.

Among Nuevo Nayarit’s most popular beaches are Punta de Mita, Litibú, Sayulita, Nuevo Vallarta, and San Pancho. These beaches are renowned for their Instagrammable scenery with golden sand and crystal-clear water that shimmers in the sun and for their welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

Each Spot Shines Differently

For example, Sayulita has a free-spirited charm that seduces its visitors. Its streets bursting with color, handicraft markets, easygoing vibe, and Nayarit traditions overall make it the perfect haven for surfers, backpackers, and families in search of the offbeat. Meanwhile, Punta de Mita is synonymous with luxury and exclusivity, with world-class resorts and restaurants where each bite is a piece of heaven.

But, if you are looking for something more peaceful and down to earth, San Pancho (well, officially San Francisco, but everyone affectionately calls it San Pancho) is the perfect spot for getting back in touch with nature and learning a bit about Nayarit’s history.

Beyond these small wonders, one of the things that make this coast so special is what you can do there. For example, if you are the adventurous type, you can try sports such as snorkeling, kayaking, or even jumping into exploring the coral reefs. Or, on the other hand, if what you need is complete relaxation, there is always a lounge chair waiting at the edge of the waves, accompanied by the sound of the lapping waves and a cold margarita.

And if that’s not enough—fun fact—many of these beaches come with other activities such as seaside yoga and/or musical events. All this together makes Nayarit’s shore a destination that you don’t just visit, but you experience and feel with your heart.

Cuisine

Get ready for this section because describing Nayarit’s cuisine means seriously whetting your appetite.

Let’s start with a real classic: pescado zarandeado. First cooked up on the island of Isla de Mexcaltitán, this dish involves a whole fish (generally snapper) that is marinated in a magical mix of lime juice, soy sauce, and chili peppers. Then, it is slowly grilled over mangrove wood.

The result? A juicy, smoky flavor that will make you groan with delight. It is garnished with slices of tomato, onion, cucumber, and freshly made tortillas.

But that’s not all, Ixtlán del Río-style chicken is another favorite you must try. The chicken is first cooked then fried in lard until it is golden and crunchy. It is served with crispy fries because they are the best match.

And of course, who could forget the seafood? Because it is right on the shore, you will find shrimp, oysters, and more, prepared every which way. There are soups, enchiladas, and shrimp tamales. From the ocean directly to your taste buds!

On top of all that, fruit brings a tropical twist. It includes mango, bananas, and guanábana (soursop: a large, sweet, creamy fruit). These become sweet desserts or juice and ice cream that can cool you off while you enjoy the warmth of the Pacific coast.

Surfers´Wonderland

If you love surfing, or if you just want to try it for the first time, Nuevo Nayarit is the place for you! Here, the waves don’t just break into perfect swells for surfing, but they also carry a special vibe, luring travelers back again and again.

A few of the most sought-after beaches for riding the foamy breakers are San Blas, San Pancho, Sayulita, Chacal, and Punta Mita.

Sayulita, for example, is considered surfing’s mecca, especially by those who are looking for consistent waves and a free-spirited air. Here, it doesn’t matter if you are a beginner looking to ride your first wave or if you are an expert adrenaline junkie, Sayulita has something for you. And after surfing, you can grab a seat at one of the cafés or bars on the shore.

However, if you are looking for something more exclusive in Punta Mita, you can find beaches such as La Lancha, which is just the spot for those trying to escape the crowds. Besides, if you get there early, you’ll have the waves all for yourself as the sun begins to peek over the horizon.

On the other hand, if you prefer to show off your mastery of the waves, you will find more challenging swells in San Pancho. Some can reach 13.1 feet high, so by evening you will be ready to relax on the shore and take in the sunset with a freshly opened coconut in hand. What more could you want?

As you can see, Nuevo Nayarit has it all and promises those special moments that you will remember forever. What are you waiting for?
